12th & Olive is a well-designed wine store on 12th Ave. in Capitol Hill, just a couple blocks from the bustle of Broadway. It's much bigger than it looks from the outside just walking by, and a lot of though obviously went into the selection. In addition to bottle sales, there are tastings and classes offered by the extremely experienced proprietor.

City Cellars is a small wine store that's called Wallingford home for twenty years. The staff is unpretentious and very knowledgable about their wines. Their tastings are pleasantly informal...you'll feel like family from the first time you visit. The store has a big rack of $10-and-under wine right when you walk in, and well-selected bargains throughout the store, as well as top-notch offerings. Their location is great, too...45th Street in Wallingford is walkable and full of fun, small shops. I love popping in to the City Cellars late Friday afternoon tasting to bid good riddance to the work week.

A fabulous specialty foods store in Pike Place Market, DeLaurenti boasts a selection of nearly 2,000 wines in addition to their unique deli and grocery offerings. Their weekly Saturday tastings are free. DeLaurenti is not to be missed next time you're downtown!

If there's a store in the Pacific Northwest with a larger selection of bottled wine than Esquin, I certainly haven't heard about it...their individual country selections are as large as some stores' entire inventories. They host two free tastings a week, so there's no excuse not to stop by frequently, and they also offer quick, free (or cheap) local delivery. Esquin is south of downtown Seattle, and has plenty of free parking. Check out their new Annex for some of the best wine bargains in town! They have some genuine experts on staff, as well as a major on-site storage facility.

A wonderful boutique wine merchant in Issaquah, about 20 minutes down Interstate 90 from Seattle. Fles has regular Saturday tastings and other special events. Every wine in the store is hand selected...there are some incredible finds here. Fles specializes in Pacific Northwest wines, and has excellent international offerings as well. Check out their special selections of Rieslings, sparkling wines, under-$15 value wines, and unique wine gifts and accessories.

A great Fremont wine merchant whose specialty is quality wines under $25...nothing costs more than that in the entire store (except for one cabinet of featured wines in the back, which are bargains in their own right). Fremont Avenue Cellars features free tastings Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and other fun special events. They also have validated parking, a real treat in the popular neighborhood!

Portalis is a wine store and wine bar with great wines, exquisite food, and an unmatched atmosphere: you'll feel like you stepped right into someone's venerable wine cellar with brick walls and lovely wood racks. They have a couple dozen wines by the glass at the bar, plus you can buy bottles at the store and drink them there. Portalis has small, informal, free tastings during the Sunday farmers market, and special tasting events throughout the year. Their special tastings are usually a little higher-end than other wine stores...they pour a lot of great wines and have outstanding homemade appetizers included in the price; these usually require an RSVP.

West Seattle Wine Cellars has diverse offerings, from a densely-packed store to free weekly tastings to myriad wine clubs, classes, and special events. Their classes in particular are a bargain at $35 or less each, and with six different wine clubs, there's something for everyone. They host numerous local winemakers, and stay open late during the West Seattle Art Walk. Their selection of Northwest wines is especially impressive.
